The Material Study is less a study for the artist than for the gallery visitors. Hidden inside an air shaft, she holds her leg through a hole in the wall for four hours each day. Within the context of the other sculptures in the gallery, the body itself becomes exhibited material.

Only a slight trembling might reveal its authenticity. A social situation forms in front of the sculpture: visitors speculate, and many cannot resist the urge to verify through touch. The study of the properties of bodily material becomes, at the same time, a social study of behavioral codes within the white cube.
